Accessibility

Some of our members are in their nineties. Some read more comfortably on paper. Some find dense text hard going. This site is meant to work for all of them, and where it does not, we would rather know.

What we have done

Type you can actually read. Body text is 18 pixels with generous line spacing, and lines are capped at about 66 characters, because long lines are where the eye loses its place. Nothing is justified. Nothing is set in all-capitals except a handful of short labels.

Backgrounds are warm off-white rather than pure white. On a bright screen, black on white is harder to read for any length of time.

Colours are measured, not guessed. Every combination of text and background on this site has been checked against the international standard for contrast (WCAG 2.1). All of them meet the AA level, and most meet the stricter AAA. That includes the white heading over the photograph on the home page, which is the one place where a designer’s eye is easily fooled.

It works on a phone, and it works if you enlarge the text in your browser.

Every photograph has a written description for anyone using a screen reader.

Every page prints properly. If you would rather read something on paper, use your browser’s print command and you will get a clean copy with the web addresses of any links written out in full, rather than a mangled screenshot.

No moving or flashing content, and if you have asked your device to reduce motion, this site respects that.

No cookies, and nothing follows you around. No advertising, no tracking scripts, no third-party services. The only record of your visit is the ordinary server log every website keeps, and we delete that after fourteen days. More on the privacy page.

Where it still falls short

Being straight about this rather than claiming perfection:

• Our documents are readable, but half of them are not well structured. We checked all 23 published PDFs on 1 September 2026, rather than assume. None of them is a scan: every one holds real text that a screen reader can read aloud. But 13 of the 23 carry no structure, so they are read out flat, with no headings to skip between and tables running together. The constitution, the charging schedule and the AGM minutes are all in that group, which is to say the ones you are most likely to need. If you would find any document easier in another form, ask, and we will transcribe it. We have already done it for the constitution, which is now a web page you can read, search and print like any other.
• The site has not yet been tested by anyone actually using a screen reader daily. Automated checks catch a great deal, but they are not the same thing. If you use one, we would be glad of half an hour of your time.

If something does not work for you

Please tell us. That is not a complaint and it is not a nuisance, it is useful information, and it is the only way we will find out.

And if you would simply prefer things on paper, say so and we will post them. Nobody here is excluded for not being online.
